Green Bay Packers Claim Son Of NFL Hall of Famer Off Waivers
The Green Bay Packers made an intriguing roster move this week by claiming wide receiver Brenden Rice off waivers. While Rice is still trying to establish himself at the NFL level, his last name immediately grabbed attention around the league.
Rice is the son of Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice, widely considered the greatest wide receiver in NFL history. The move gives Green Bay another developmental option in an already crowded receiver room, but it also adds one of the more fascinating storylines of the offseason.
Brenden Rice Brings NFL Bloodlines to the Green Bay Packers

Brenden Rice entered the NFL as a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft after a productive college career at USC. During his final season with the Trojans, Rice recorded 12 touchdown receptions while showing the physical traits NFL teams covet in outside receivers.
At 6-foot-3 and over 200 pounds, Rice fits the mold of the bigger-bodied receivers the Packers have consistently targeted in recent years. His combination of size, physicality, and red-zone ability made him an interesting prospect coming out of college, even if he lacked elite separation skills. So far, however, Rice’s professional career has been uneven.
He has already spent time with the Los Angeles Chargers, New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, and Las Vegas Raiders before landing in Green Bay. The Packers have now become the fifth organization to take a chance on the young receiver.
Packers May View Rice as a Low-Risk Developmental Player
The move does not necessarily mean Rice is guaranteed a roster spot. Green Bay already has a deep receiving corps led by Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and Matthew Golden. The Packers also continue to add competition through younger players and offseason signings. Still, Rice gives the team another intriguing developmental piece with a strong pedigree and upside.
According to reports, Green Bay waived defensive tackle James Ester to make room for Rice on the roster. The Packers have shown a willingness in recent years to take chances on athletic receivers who may need time to develop. Rice’s physical traits alone make him worth evaluating during offseason programs and training camp.
Jerry Rice’s Legacy Will Always Follow Brenden Rice
Fair or not, comparisons to Jerry Rice will likely follow Brenden throughout his career. That is an incredibly difficult standard for any player to live up to, considering Jerry Rice still owns nearly every major receiving record in NFL history. The Hall of Famer finished his legendary career with 1,549 receptions, 22,895 receiving yards, and 197 receiving touchdowns.
Brenden Rice has openly embraced the expectations that come with his last name while trying to build his own identity as a player. During the pre-draft process, Jerry Rice even discussed working with his son on route running and release techniques to help refine his game. That mentorship could still help Brenden carve out a role in the NFL.
Brenden Rice Could Become a Sleeper to Watch in Packers Camp
While Rice enters training camp facing an uphill battle, the opportunity in Green Bay may be better than it initially appears.
The bottom of the Packers’ receiver depth chart remains unsettled, and strong performances on special teams or in preseason action could help Rice earn a roster spot. His size and contested-catch ability also offer something slightly different from some of Green Bay’s other young receivers.
At minimum, this is a low-risk move for the Packers. At best, Green Bay may have found a developmental player with untapped upside and one of the most recognizable football bloodlines imaginable.
Even if Brenden Rice never reaches the level of his legendary father, his arrival in Green Bay instantly creates one of the more interesting storylines to watch heading into Packers training camp.
